Ben has been part of the team since September 2024, joining us as a workplace student as part of his Arboriculture course at Suffolk Rural College. During this time, he has worked with us regularly for two days each week, gaining valuable hands-on experience alongside our arboricultural team.

Ben is currently undertaking his assessments to qualify as an arborist. It has been a pleasure to have him with us, and we look forward to him joining us full time. We wish him every success in his assessments!

What inspired you to pursue a career in arboriculture?

I’ve always been an outdoors person at home, and once I found out that I could have a career in climbing and working with trees for a living, I had to give it a go.

What do you most love about your role?

At the moment I can’t help but appreciate the experience of others around me and seeing how they tackle climbing jobs, as well as using big machinery and kit to make jobs easier.

How do you stay up to date with industry standards and techniques?

From college, which taught me all the industry best practice I need to know and the industry approved tickets which I’ve carried out and completed.

What is your favourite piece of equipment to use and why?

My Courant kalimba climbing rope. It has a great static to stretch mix for switching from DRT (Double Rope Technique) to SRT (Single Rope Technique) systems.

What skills or qualities do you think make a great arborist?

Being calm and collected when carrying out work to make a good work environment. As well as being able to persevere even when jobs seem tough, as the end result is always worth it.

Outside of studying, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I’ve been getting into wild camping and trekking so look forward to trips I’ve got planned. As well as my fitness and gym which keeps me busy!
