Meet the team – Connor Everitt

Next in our Meet the Team series is Connor Everitt!

Connor has been part of the Gadd Brothers team for over six years and is a fully qualified Arborist and our Second Climber. Working alongside the Lead Climber, Connor plays a key role in larger dismantling operations, assists with complex rigging and undertakes work on small to medium-sized trees while continuing to build the experience needed to progress to a Lead Climber position.

As one of the most experienced members of the ground team, the Second Climber is instrumental in managing rigging operations during larger tree removals, ensuring work is carried out safely and efficiently. They also help increase productivity on larger projects by working in different areas of the same tree or canopy, whether that’s carrying out crown reductions or dismantling operations. The role also includes being ready to provide an emergency aerial rescue if required and carrying out essential site safety checks throughout the day.

In this edition, Connor tells us about his most memorable day at work, how the team considers the environment on every job, and what’s at the top of his bucket list.

What is your favourite piece of arb kit and why?

My favourite piece of equipment is the Stihl MS 500i chainsaw. It’s a great saw with lots of power, always reliable and the power to weigh ratio is amazing.

What does a typical day look like for you on-site as Second Climber?

A typical day for me is making sure the main climber has everything he needs and keeping a safe and tidy work site.

What’s the most memorable or unusual project you’ve worked on?

My most memorable day at work was when we were tasked with felling trees on a building site where the site had turned to thick, knee-deep mud while working in a torrential downpour. We had to winch the trees back up the hill though all the mud. Then James Gadd took an accidental splash in the river which was quite amusing! 😅

How do you balance the technical and environmental aspects of your role?

We balance our environmental aspect by send our Arb chip to the power stations to be burned for renewable electricity.  We also where possible, take one vehicle to site therefore reducing the number of vehicles we have on the road. The team also has undertaken many hedge and tree planting projects, so I look forward in the years to come seeing how these freshly planted woodlands have come on.

What’s your proudest achievement in your career so far?

My proudest achievement in my career so far was being asked to help rig a large poplar tree which was sadly being felled due to basal decay. It was an amazing experience to travel up to the top of the tree on the hook of the crane in order to reach and secure the load allowing each section of the tree to be lowered safely to the ground.

One thing that is on my bucket list is to operate a digger with a tree shear!
