James Horswill joined the team as an arborist in 2024, having completed a National Diploma in Arboriculture at Suffolk Rural, formally known as Otley College. James is currently progressing his career as a climber with us gaining invaluable experience week on week.
How long have you been working in tree surgery, and what drew you to this profession?
I’ve been an arborist for 4 years now. When I was younger I enjoyed climbing trees and doing woodwork, so when I found out there was a career which basically incorporates both I knew it was want I wanted to do. Plus, I’m an outdoorsy person and couldn’t be behind a computer all day.
What do you most love about your role?
I love the variety each day brings. Each job determines what my role is for the day. One day I could be in the tree pruning and the next purely working on the ground with the saw and chipping up the brash.
Do you have a favourite tree species? If so, why?
The Salix matsudana Tortuosa, more commonly known as corkscrew willow, is my favourite species. I love the intricate swirls and curls of the branches as it grows and all the vibrant colours of the bark and leaves. This species has always fascinated me, and I loved researching the characteristics and the reasoning behind it in college.
What is your favourite piece of equipment to use and why? My favourite piece of kit is my Sthil 200 T. After I bought it, I added a 14′ speed cut nano bar and chain. I treat it like my own child and it’s my favourite saw to use as it’s quite versatile and good at chogging, or dismantling timber.
What motivates you to deliver high standards on every job?
The joy on a client’s face when you’ve left the site nice and tidy having transform their hedge or tree, as well as seeing a visible difference. I enjoy a return visit to a site to see the new growth and pre-made shape of a tree once it fills out.
Besides arboriculture, what are you most passionate about?
I enjoy rock climbing and going on mini adventures with lots of actives with my mates. I also love cooking, and eating, food with lots of flavours!
